Hard Bags

The final piece of my triple puzzle was mounting the hard bags.

I bought a set of NOS bags and bag mount off eBay a couple of years ago.

The bags were for an E model and were painted red.

I had them repainted to match my 2D.

The mount was advertised as being for a D/2D.

I found out pretty quickly that it was not.

It was for the F and later models.

Yamaha changed the passenger peg mount with the F model.

It was moved rearward and was attached to a bracket instead a triangular mount on the frame.

This bag mount did not fit a 2D.

The problem was solved with the installation of two 3 1/2 " high strength steel bars that tied the front lower bag mounts to the passenger peg mounts.

A common problem with these bags is the loss of a lid while on the road.

I solved that by installing a set of Yamaha Road Star bag tethers.

The later model mount is superior to the first model.

The original design suffered from the way the bags were attached to it.

They were installed on the mount by three bolts on the inside of the bag.

There was also a support bar that attached from the mount to the front bottom of the bag with another bolt.

Every bolt required a hole to be drilled into the bag.

Waterproofing was difficult and these bags are notorious for leaking and shedding their lids.

With the newer mount the bags are attached by two or three bolts in the inside and two on the outside.

This supports the them equally when the bags are loaded and prevents them from deforming.

I decided to use two bolts on each side and not use the lower inside bolt.

I figured every hole I drilled into them allowed more water to get inside.

The mount was designed to accommodate a different size bag than the original ones I had.

Yamaha made the F model bags a little wider and shorter, so the ones I had didn't quite fit.

I had to position them perfectly in order to allow for the lids to be opened.

I used several spacers in addition to the included rubber washers to allow for the bags to fill the width of the mount.
