Muffler Mounts

The original mufflers on the triple Standard model were mounted by tabs on the top of the muffler to the frame just forward of the passenger foot pegs.

Most of the weight of the muffler was well to the rear of the mount.

This arrangement meant that a considerable amount of stress was imparted to the muffler and they rarely lasted for more than a couple of years.

Mine lasted for 2 years before they were replaced by a Jardine 3-1.

One of the problems I had with mounting the hard bags on my bike was the Jardine 3-1 muffler kicks up and interfered with the right bag mount.

This page shows how I got my new 27" Dunstall mufflers to mount with less stress on them.

These 2 mounts were key to getting the mufflers to mount properly.

I designed them and a local fabricator made them to my specs.

The 2D has an unusual asymmetry associated with the rear peg mounts.

This is the result of the shaft drive assembly and the clearances that it requires.

In order to get the mounts and mufflers to work together I had to grind about 1/4" off each of the muffler retainer bolts.

The clearance between the muffler retainer bolt and the peg mount was very small and even 1/4" excess length was too much.
